TIRECRAFT Tips – Back to school driving

Summer outings and adventures are coming to an end and kids across the country are getting ready for the new school year ahead – and so should you. Drivers need to be hyper-aware of the extra cars, school busses and children on the roads and sidewalks this back to school season.

The next time you jump in your vehicle to go somewhere, keep these TIRECRAFT tips in mind for back to school driving:

1. Slow Down in School Zones

It’s important to remember to slow down as you approach a school zone while driving.  Speed limits in school zones are typically around 30km/h or 40km/h. Driving at a slower speed gives drivers more time to stop safely in unexpected situations. Children may be out throughout the day for recess, lunch time or field trips so being aware at all times is important.

2. Watch & Obey Crossing Guards at All Times

Along with being aware while driving in school zones you also need to keep an eye out for crossing guards. Crossing guards help guide vehicular and pedestrian traffic in their designated area. When a school crossing guard displays a red and white stop sign, you must stop before reaching the crossing and yield to pedestrians who are crossing. Drivers who do not follow this can put pedestrians at risk as well as receive a fine. It is also important to not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.

3. Expect the Unexpected

It is always important to think ahead while driving in school zones, playgrounds, parks and residential areas. Children can be unpredictable and can run out into traffic at any time, or swerve their bikes into a vehicles path. Watch carefully while driving for children coming from driveways or behind parked cars. By exercising a little caution, drivers and pedestrians can co-exist safely in school zones.

4. Educate

Lastly, it is imperative that we teach our children and young drivers the importance of safety on the road as well. Children should stay well away from any streets while they are at school; only crossing the street at designated cross walks ideally with supervision of a crossing guard.  Young drivers should be defensive when on the road and aware of their surroundings at all times.
