TIRECRAFT Tips – Wiper Blades

When is the last time you changed your wiper blades?

Majority of vehicle owners can’t answer this question.

Did you know that 90% of driving decisions are made based on vision, yet drivers don’t give much thought about windshield wipers until they are in the middle of a down pour or a snow storm? These important inventions were created to provide additional vehicle safety and made it possible to drive during inclement weather.

To get the best driving experience in your vehicle, wiper blades should be replaced every 6 months or as soon as you notice signs of wear. Some noticeable signs of wear include:

  • Skipping/Streaking: showing inconsistent contact with the windshield. This happens from having worn, hardened and/or cracked blades.
  • Worn or split rubber: rubber on wiper blade losing its original shape. This happens from extensive use and the rubber being compromised from extended exposure to the elements.
  • Bent Frame: frame of wiper blade losing original shape. This happens from built up snow, ice scrapers or even automatic car washes.

Keeping an eye out for these signs will help you determine when your wiper blades need to be replaced. Some easy steps that could help extend the life of your wipers include cleaning your windshield every time you fill your gas tank, wipe the rubber squeegee periodically to remove any loose dirt or debris and pull your wiper blades away from the windshield during winter months to avoid snow build up and freezing. It’s always a good idea to check and top up your washer fluid while checking your wiper blades to maximize visibility.

Maintaining your wipers and washer system is an easy and affordable way to ensure the safety of you and your family while traveling in your vehicle. If you are unsure of your wiper blades condition, contact your local TIRECRAFT today! We can assist with evaluating conditions as well as replace and install new wiper blades!
