TIRECRAFT Tips – Back to school driving

Summer outings and adventures are coming to an end, and kids across the country are getting ready for the new school year ahead – and so should you. Drivers need to be hyper-aware of the extra cars, school buses, and children on the roads and sidewalks this back-to-school season.

The next time you jump in your vehicle to go somewhere, keep these TIRECRAFT tips in mind for back-to-school driving:

1. Slow Down in School Zones

It’s important to remember to slow down as you approach a school zone while driving. Speed limits in school zones are typically around 30 km/h or 40 km/h. Driving at a slower speed gives drivers more time to stop safely in unexpected situations. Children may be out throughout the day for recess, lunchtime, or field trips, so being aware at all times is important.

2. Watch & Obey Crossing Guards at All Times

Along with being aware while driving in school zones, you also need to keep an eye out for crossing guards. Crossing guards help guide vehicular and pedestrian traffic in their designated area. When a school crossing guard displays a red and white stop sign, you must stop before reaching the crossing and yield to pedestrians who are crossing. Drivers who do not follow this can put pedestrians at risk as well as receive a fine. It is also important not to block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic.

3. Stop for School Buses

You must stop whenever you approach a stopped school bus with its upper alternating red lights flashing, regardless of whether you are behind the bus or approaching it from the front. When approaching the bus from the front, stop at a safe distance to allow children to get off the bus and cross the road in front of you. If you are coming from behind the bus, stop at least 20 meters away. Do not proceed until the bus moves or the lights have stopped flashing. You must obey the school bus law on any road, no matter how many lanes or what the speed limit is. Be prepared to stop for a school bus at any time, not just within school hours.

4. Expect the Unexpected

It is always important to think ahead while driving in school zones, playgrounds, parks, and residential areas. Children can be unpredictable and may run out into traffic at any time or swerve their bikes into a vehicle’s path. Watch carefully while driving for children coming from driveways or behind parked cars. By exercising a little caution, drivers and pedestrians can co-exist safely in school zones.

5. Educate

Lastly, it is imperative that we teach our children and young drivers the importance of safety on the road as well. Children should stay well away from any streets while they are at school, only crossing the street at designated crosswalks, ideally with the supervision of a crossing guard. Young drivers should be defensive when on the road and aware of their surroundings at all times.

By being aware and following these tips, you can avoid accidents, injuries, and save time. Wishing everyone safe travels during this back-to-school season from your TIRECRAFT Family. Real People Servicing Real Life.
