Are Auto Diagnostics Tests DIY Friendly?
Yes and no.
On the one hand, in 2022, just about anyone can buy an On-Board Diagnostics interface or ODB II tool and start running tests at home. Since 1996, all vehicles have been manufactured with a common connector to access vehicle diagnostic information, and you can buy an ODB II tool for $30-50 online.
However, not all drivers will be able to make sense of ODB II test results, which provide “freeze frame data” about your engine’s operating conditions in hard code format, such as:
- P0128 — Coolant Thermostat
- P0300 — Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
- P0420 — EVAP System Incorrect Purge Flow
Do these codes make sense to you? Does the description help? For most drivers, the answer will be no; even if they understand the automotive argot (e.g. EVAP System Incorrect Purge Flow), these codes won’t tell the whole story. To get the bottom of these error messages, you’ll need additional testing and expertise.
Think of it like this: you can buy a thermometer and take your temperature at home, but you won’t know how to pinpoint or treat the problem until you visit your family doctor.
While you may be able to run auto diagnostics tests at home, you won’t reap the rewards without professional help. And if you must take your car in to the shop anyways, is it really worth spending the extra money on a home auto diagnostics tool?
