Stay Safe Through Winter 2021: Studies Show Snow Tires Work
The best way to stay safe on the roads this winter is to invest in a set of snow tires. But don’t take our word for it—research bears out their effectiveness, with studies showing that winter tires can:
- Shorten braking distances—A report by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation found that winter tires that are in good condition (i.e. 3mm deep tread) can shorten braking distances by as much as 25%
- Improve grip and handling on ice and snow—A report by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) found that winter tires offered superior braking and handling performance in tests of three different driving maneuvers: braking in a straight line, accelerating in a straight line, and an avoidance maneuver. Additionally, test vehicles equipped with winter tires showed better acceleration, requiring 27.3% less time to reach top speed on snow.
- Increase cornering safety and performance—In TIRF tire tests, only vehicles equipped with snow tires were able to complete cornering comparisons, involving 90-degree turns at 40km/h.
With these tire test results in mind, it’s little wonder that nearly three-quarters of Canadians now drive on snow tires come winter, and 88% believe they’ve saved them from being involved in serious collisions (Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, 2020, p. 5).

Prepare For Winter 2021: When To Book A Car Tire Change Near Me
In Ontario, we go by temperature, not by date. You should book a car tire change as soon as temperatures fall to 7 degrees or lower—this is the temperature at which snow tires’ special rubber compounds are designed to work. The exact date varies because it’s such a large province, but most drivers book their car tire change between late-October to mid-November.
