Tire Safety Checklist: Maintenance Tips From Your Local TIRECRAFT

Investing in proper tire maintenance services at your local mechanic not only keeps you safe, it also:

  • Improves fuel economy, reducing your footprint and saving you money at the pump
  • Extends tire life, protecting you from irregular wear and reducing long term maintenance costs
  • Enhances handling and performance, keeping vital components in shape and distributing the weight of your vehicle evenly to promote better stability and cornering
  • Reduces exhaust emissions, lowering your vehicle’s carbon footprint by an average of 327 pounds per year.

To help bring you these benefits, today’s post shares the top-5 takeaways from Transport Canada’s tire safety checklist. If you need help with any of these critical maintenance services, contact one of our local TIRECRAFTS. With more than 300+ locations around the country, all staffed by ASE-certified specialists, qualified tire maintenance services are closer than you think!

Transport Canada’s Tire Safety Checklist: Do It All At TIRECRAFT!

1.   “Measure Tire Pressure At Least Once A Month.”

Additionally, you should measure tire pressure before setting out on a long trip. Good-quality tire pressure gauges are widely available and relatively inexpensive.

According to a recent study cited by Transport Canada’s Riding On Air report, about 70% of the vehicles on the road in Canada have at least one tire that is either over or underinflated by more than 10%. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 (23%) of all vehicles surveyed had at least one tire underinflated by more than 20%! This is a serious safety issue—and one that can be resolved straight away at your local TIRECRAFT.

2.   “Don’t Use The Pressure Indicated On The Tire.”

Generally speaking, tires list the maximum air pressure, not the recommended air pressure. Instead of using the pressure indicated on the tire, consult the placard on the driver’s door or glove box, check your owner’s manual, or ask the experts at your local tire dealer.

3.   “Once A Month, Inspect Tires.”

Look for uneven tread wear, cuts or cracks, bulges, foreign objects, or other signs of damage. You can also check tread depth using the classic quarter test. If you spot any signs of wear and tear, no matter how small they might seem, contact your local TIRECRAFT for a professional opinion.

4.    “Rotate Your Tires On A Regular Basis.”

Your tires should be rotated roughly every six months to even out their wear and maximize the life of your tires. As a good rule of thumb, you should book a tire rotation with your local mechanic whenever you get an oil change.

5.    “Buy The Most Appropriate Tires For Your Vehicle And Your Driving Needs.”

One of the most important things you can do to enhance your tire safety is to shop smart. Unfortunately, most local tire dealers’ tire consultations start and end with one simple question:

“How much are you looking to spend?”

And that’s about it. This approach is fast and it gets results—you get a good price on a set of tires, anyway, which is what you asked for—but there’s zero chance of finding the perfect fit, which can cost you over the long term.

At TIRECRAFT, we’re changing the conversation, taking tire talks beyond basic budget questions to factor in your unique vehicle fit, local weather conditions, and performance preferences.
