TIRECRAFT Tips – Keeping Your Car Clean

Keeping your home and your office clean and sanitized right now is top of mind now more than ever. But what about your car? With the Coronavirus crisis spreading across the globe keeping your home, office and car clean and sanitized is important. Even if you aren’t driving as much these days, it’s still important to make sure that your vehicle is clean to keep you and your family safe as you travel, commute, or even run errands.

The first thing to keep in mind when cleaning and sanitizing your vehicle is that heavy-duty chemicals can not only be harmful to your car’s interior, but they are often unnecessary. Health officials recommend isopropyl alcohol which contains 70% alcohol or simple soap and water to kill viruses. This will still be harsh on germs but gentle on the interior of your vehicle. If your car’s interior is leather, consider using soap and water over isopropyl alcohol as it can be harmful to the thin protective coating that prevents discoloration of the leather. The soap will chemically interact with the surface of the virus, breaking it down and destroying it very quickly.

When Cleaning and Sanitizing your Vehicle Here Are Some Things To Keep in Mind:

Prioritize high touch areas – make sure to target these areas as often as possible, to help stop the spread of germs. Areas you are in contact with every time you get in or out of your vehicle should be a top priority to clean, such as:

  • Touch screens
  • Steering wheel
  • Keys/Key fobs
  • Door handles (inside and out)
  • Window and door lock buttons
  • Climate control buttons
  • Seatbelts and buckles
  • Armrests
  • Wiper blade and turn signal stalks
  • Air vents

Once your Car is Clean it is Also Recommended to Do the Following:

  • Wash or sanitize your hands before getting in
  • Sanitize or wear gloves while using gas pumps
  • Keep a weekly car cleaning routine

These simple but effective cleaning tips may seem tedious but can help make a big difference in the transmission of viruses keeping you and your loved ones safe and healthy. Whether it’s your family vehicle, a ride share vehicle (Taxi or Uber), shared workplace vehicle or maybe a newly purchased vehicle, having a regular cleaning schedule is the best way to combat the spread of germs and viruses.
