Will My Car Pass Its Motor Vehicle Inspection?

If you’ve just bought a vehicle that’s new-to-you (or you recently moved to Ontario), your car will need to pass the new Passenger / Light Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard.

If that standard is also new-to-you, you might be wondering: “Will my car pass its motor vehicle inspection?” As a matter of fact, this is one of the most common questions we see from consumers, both in-shop and when we review the results of Google’s People Also Ask tool.

The best way to answer this question is to book a consultation with one of our motor vehicle inspection specialists—it’s completely free, and it will give us a chance to learn more about your unique vehicle.

And if you’re not ready for a consultation, that’s not a problem—TIRECRAFT is still here to help.

Read on to review official motor vehicle inspection criteria to inform your best guess, or contact your local TIRECRAFT to schedule a free quote and consultation straight away.

Will My Car Pass Its Motor Vehicle Inspection?

According to Section 1.2 of the Passenger / Light Duty Vehicle Inspection Standard, “a pass or fail outcome of a vehicle inspection is based on the condition of the vehicle at the time of the inspection,” based on evaluations of the following components:

  • Powertrain
  • Suspension
  • Brake system
  • Steering
  • Instruments and auxiliary equipment
  • Lamps
  • Electrical system
  • Body
  • Tire and wheel
  • Coupling devices

Additionally, your vehicle will be required to complete a road test that includes:

  • Driving at speeds in excess of 40km/h
  • Successful left and right turns at full lock (maximum steering-wheel travel, against stop)
  • At least one heavy application of the service brakes from a minimum speed of 40km/h
  • Application and assessment of parking brake performance
  • Driving over at least one bump 5cm in height or taller

Some of the most common culprits for failed motor vehicle inspections include:

  • Leaky exhaust or loose, damaged, or corroded powertrain components
  • Worn suspension, particularly if it causes any tire interference or suspension travel
  • Shot brakes, especially if your brake-shoe lining is nearing the 1.6mm mark
  • Bald tires, with tread depth less than 2mm at point of minimum tread depth
  • Instrument malfunctions, including inoperative speedometer, odometer, windshield wipers, heaters/defrosters, or auxiliary controls and devices
  • Faulty steering mechanism, especially if your wheels are unable to turn from full right to full left, and back again, without interference or indication of roughness in the mechanism
  • Windshield cracks that extend more than 50mm into the windshield wiper area, or star-shaped chips with a diameter of 13mm or more

If your vehicle is plagued by any of these problems, you may need to invest in repair and maintenance before you book your motor vehicle inspection.
