Simplify Your Next Tire Replacement: Top-5 Tips From A Tire Repair Shop

Tire replacements can be costly and complicated, but not with the TIRECRAFT team by your side. Read on to learn 5 tips to simplify your next tire replacement and control service costs, or contact your local TIRECRAFT to get a free quote straight away.

1.   Don’t Dally With Tire Replacement—It Could Cost You!

As per Transport Canada’s recommendations, you should immediately invest in a tire replacement if:

  • Your tire treads fall below 1.5mm, or the tread has worn even with the tread wear indicator. Driving with insufficient tread is extremely dangerous for both you and your fellow drivers.
  • Your tires turn 10 years old. Most tires should be replaced at the 6 year mark, but some can last as long as a decade. If the manufacturing date is more than 10 years past, it’s time for a tire replacement; even if your tires look fine, they’re probably internally compromised.
  • Your tires are damaged. If you notice any large cracks, cuts, or bulges in the sidewall or tread, you will need to schedule an immediate tire replacement.
  • Your tires are leaking air. While some tire leaks can be repaired, and a loss of about 2 PSI per month is normal, consistent air leaks resulting in rapid pressure loss indicate it’s time for a tire replacement.

The longer you drive on tires in need of replacement, the greater your risks of:

  • Loss of control—If your treads aren’t in good condition, or your tire compounds are old and plagued with dry-rot, you’ll have very little control, traction, or quick-braking capabilities.
  • Catastrophic tire failure—Tire replacement comes at a cost, but it’s worth it to avoid a serious tire failure on the road.
  • Reduced fuel efficiency—”Operating a vehicle with just one tire underinflated by 56 kPa (8 psi) can reduce the life of the tire by 15,000 km and can increase the vehicle’s fuel consumption by 4%,” states Transport Canada.
  • Increased tire replacement costs—If one tire is damaged, it could disrupt your other tires’ contact patches and cause damage.

2.   Match Up The Specs For A Worry-Free Tire Replacement

When purchasing a tire replacement, make sure it matches all of your existing tires’ specifications, including:

  • Tire size
  • Tire load capacity
  • Tire speed rating

This information can be found on the tire sidewall, and recommendations for tire size, load capacity, and speed rating appear on the placard inside the driver’s door frame.

3.   Follow The Manufacturer’s Tire Replacement Instructions

For a worry-free tire replacement, Transport Canada recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions for:

  • Tire inflation—The PSI displayed on your tire sidewall is the absolute maximum level, not the recommended level for daily use.
  • Wheel nut tightness—The correct wheel nut tightness can be found in your owner’s manual.
  • Wheel alignment—Unless you have a reason to set up your vehicle for oversteer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If you’re struggling to find the manufacturer’s instructions or you’ve misplaced your owner’s manual, get in touch with your local TIRECRAFT tire replacement expert.

4.   Try To Replace All 4 Tires At Once (Or Match Tire Type)

Rolling out an old spare and mismatching tire types might help you save some money on a tire replacement, but it’s not worth it. Mismatched treads, tire construction, and rubber compounds lead to unpredictable tire performance, poor fuel economy and excessive wear on your braking, suspension, and steering systems, to say nothing of the serious safety risks.

If possible, try to replace all 4 tires at once. If not, make sure you’re buying the same tire type, and be sure to rotate your tires regularly to even out the wear.

5.   Don’t Overpay For Your Next Tire Replacement—Call TIRECRAFT

Most people do not plan out their next tire replacement—on the contrary, tire failures often take people by surprise, which forces many drivers to shop for tires when there are no seasonal rebates to be had.

But while you won’t always be able to control the timing of your next tire replacement, you can control where you have it done, and that can greatly affect how much you pay.

When you choose TIRECRAFT for your tire replacement, you can greatly reduce the costs of parts and labour by taking advantage of:

  • Official rebate programs, like the General Tire Hit the Road! Program, which offers an instant rebate of $60 when you purchase a set of 4 General AltiMAX 365 AW tires. We participate in all of the top brands’ promotions, so if you’re shopping during rebate season, you’ll never miss an opportunity to save.
  • Exclusive TIRECRAFT discounts, which vary based on individual owner inventory and discretion. Contact your local TIRECRAFT to see what promotions are currently running.
  • MyTIRECRAFT rewards, a customer loyalty program that gets you discount points for every dollar spent on tire replacement parts and services.
  • TIRECRAFT’s Mechanical Warranty, which guarantees that all tire replacement, repairs and other services performed at your local TIRECRAFT will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for 12 months or 20,000km of use, whichever comes first.
  • One-stop shop savings, as you can schedule your tire inspection, removal, and replacement all at once, along with any other services that may be required (e.g. wheel balancing after a collision), and bundle all of your product and service costs together for one great price.
